Might as well start another debate. New system to be ordered. Contemplate running AutoCAD 2008, so, which OS? XP Pro or Vista (what's the equivalent). Opinions welcomed (the good, the bad and the ugly). Let's have at it. And, "thanks" in advance for any wisdom shared.

Vista (what's the equivalent)
Vista Business or Vista Ultimate Edition

My first impulse would be to go with XP Pro, but in reality I would suggest going to Vista Ultimate and start figuring it out now, that way you can help the rest of us when we upgrade.
The future for now is Vista, there is no getting around that, unless you want to go MAC and once you go MAC you will soon be back.

It is even funnier now that I have read ReMark's other post.

I guess I would also add that I am currently running Autocad on a Vista 32bit laptop. It's definitely slower than XP Pro even with all the fancy graphics effects turned off.
My rationale with going with Vista was that eventually most people will be moving to Vista over time. I figured I could downgrade my license to XP if I needed to if Vista just didn't work out vs. buying an upgrade later.
I'm running the Vista SP1 (public release candidate) and that seems to help performance some overall.
I think you're safe going with Vista if you want to, but I don't know that I could really recommend it either.
How adventurous are you?

If your machine is not up to par, Vista is the wrong choice, the OS was designed for new machines in mind, not older ones. If you have a relativly new machine, and it has some oommmpphh to it, I would definatly go with Vista, anything above the home basic.

Currently I use XP Pro at work and at home. If I buy a new Windows based computer I must make a choice. Most vendors will still load XP if requested but at some point Microsoft will put a halt to that. I too believe that Vista is where things will ultimately go. Doesn't it just bug you that when you finally feel comfortable with an OS and have things set up the way you want, that's when the new OS comes out and we get the hard sell?
One other advantage to going with Vista would be I could learn the new OS before my daughter goes off to college. In all likelihood, by the time we buy her the new laptop (June or July), Vista will be the only OS available unless MS has a big change of heart. When she calls home with all the Vista related questions I might have a clue what she is talking about! Agree? Disagree?

Vista is not that different in functionality than XP. It does have some upfront differences, but it will mostly run like XP. anyone can definatly just pick it up and use it, especialy if you are used to XP.

Vista still has some bugs so I'm sticking with XP Pro for a while

I guess it may also come down to what version of AutoCAD is running and system specs. Probably no reason to stay with XP if one has the latest and greatest computer and you're running 2009. Will be looking into this later this year as I swap out computers.
