My intention is to try the use of animated gif images in presentations. I am searching a program capable to generate this type of images from individual bmp (or other commonly used format) images. Additional requests: the program must be for free and cost nothing.
Any help will be appreciated.

How about the GIMP http://gimp.org/. This was originally developed for Unix but there's now a Windows version here http://www.gimp.org/~tml/gimp/win32/.

Here are a couple of tutorials for creating animated GIFs with the GIMP:

http://www.digitalhermit.com/linux/ray_tracing/gimp/

http://www.csb.yale.edu/userguides/image/moviemaker/anim_gif.html

Alternatively, see here for a selection of freeware and shareware applications for creating animated GIFs. I haven't had a look at all of these myself but if you try some of them out, let us have your recommendations.

Actually, it's something I've been trying to find time to do for some time. To be honest I still haven't had the time to give it a proper test drive

If you are looking for a program to make animated tutorials, why not use CamStudio ( http://www.rendersoftware.com/ ) free and very easy to use...

The latest version can be found here: http://download.com.com/redir?pid=10166839&merid=54611&mfgid=54611&ltype=dl_dlnow&lop=link&edId=3&siteId=4&oId=3000-2194-10166839&ontId=2194&destUrl=%2F3001-2194-10166839.html

Although it says 1.6 it is version 1.8 the Rendersoft website says...
