hi
how do i delete layers off the layers list ...i only need about 4 layers but because i use bits off other drawings i keep bringing in loads of weird layers called many different names .
when i try to delte them ..they say they are 'ref' or something like this ...and cant be deleted .

Make sure nothing is on the layer and do a purge all.

I see you're using LT2007. I had the same problem with LT2004 and ended up having to rename the only layer that wouldn't delete with a Z so it was at the end of the list.
I remember I turned off every other layer leaving only that one and erased everything on it using Erase - All and it still wouldn't let me delete it, saying it was in use even though it wasn't.
I never could figure that one out.

Freeze the layers you want to keep.
Use command "Select". Type "All" on command line. Enter out of command.
Type command "Erase". Type "P" for previous. Enter out of command.
Purge your drawing of unreferenced items.
This should remove everything you don't want.

If you have a block in your drawing that was created on a specific layer (say 1), and the block was inserted on another layer (say 2), then if you freeze layer 2, nothing shows on layer 1. Layer 1 cannot be deleted in that instance even though nothing shows on it. :(
