Thanks Mark, I've enjoyed tweaking phpBB. I now know a lot more about how it works than I did before - I've even managed to pick up a bit of PHP and MySQL.

I popped over to The Swamp yesterday to alert you to the new 2.0.11 security upgrade and when I got there I saw you'd already done it - excellent forum management!

We've had a bit of a rocky time here recently. We changed web hosts last month and there have been a few teething troubles but I'm hoping that's behind us now. Am I right in thinking you have your own web server for The Swamp?

PHP and mysql is good stuff isn't it. I managed to do a few things with them also, mainly admin stuff.

Thanks for the thought. It was actually pure luck that I found the new patch. I was browsing sourceforge this weekend and noticed it.

Yes, I have 3 servers, the main server and two backups. They all run NetBSD. I pay for a high-speed line into my home which allows me too run theswamp and host a few other domains. It's a bit more money than paying someone for webspace but I control everything. If you ever decide to go this route please let me know, maybe I can be of some help. I recently setup a server remotely for a friend of mind. All I need is a SSH connection to get one up and running as a web, mail, ftp, etc. server.

Sure, I've installed maybe 6 mods on this board and not one of them didn't need hacking before they worked just the way I wanted. You're right about adnim - dealing with users can be a real pain. I'm now using the Prune Users (http://mods.db9.dk/viewforum.php?f=10) mod (hacked to death) to help keep on top of things. I find lots of users register and then never validate or validate and then never login. And then there are the those that link to porn sites...

I just hope phpBB 2.2 is going to have better admin user control out of the box!

So, how fast is "high-speed"? The fastest I can get here at the moment is 2MB/s.

I'm at 3MBps/768Kbps, I can go up to 4MBps/2MBps but that's a little expensive. BTW, that's cable which is on a fiberoptic backbone.

Interesting...

I think it'll be a while before I'm running my own web server. I live out in the sticks and local telco infrastructure isn't so good - copper on poles!

I guess I'll have to wait for satelite :(

BTW if you're interested in any of the mods you see here, let me know. I particularly like being able to see the topic title for the latest post in each forum on the index page - probably the best improvement in terms of user experience.

Thanks a bunch! My problem is to many styles, applying mods to more than one style can be a real pain. Of course my perfect style would have zero graphics in it. :D You make one of those and I'b be your friend for life.

I like that one too, very nice indeed.

Say, where did you get those Emoticons? Those are nice. :? <- favorite.

Yes, I cosidered having multiple styles for about a minute and a half :D before I realised the potential mess and extra work that that would involve. I have a vague idea of allowing users to choose the default subSilver style as an option but at the moment that just seems like too much work.

Actually, they are from Invision Power Board. I run a couple of other forums using IPB and I've always preferred them to the phpBB emoticons - I've always thought them a bit crude.

There wasn't an exact match between the two boards so I had to make a few extras in the same style to cover all the emoticons in phpBB but it worked out quite well. o:)

I haven't made a phpBB smilie pack but you're welcome to the images if you'd like them.

Thanks, I might just take you up on that. :D
