Problem de-selecting groups

I used to toggle groups on and off by simply pressing ctrl+H, but now whenever I do that I get this message in the command line

Enter variable name or [?] <PICKSTYLE>: pickstyle
Enter new value for PICKSTYLE <0>: 1

Why is this happening? How can I change it back?

I have tried using ctrl+shift+a as that was the alternate command listed in the help files, but it doesn't do what I want. it just comes up as

WHen I first started using groups I could switch them on and off using just ctrl+H, it just switched on/off straight away, no need to type anything else into the command line or pick any other objects.

ok I think it's fixed. That first message I typed seems to appear whenever I toggle groups on or off. I only noticed it when I lost my groups though - I think I must have typed something into the command line without realising, which got rid of my groups. I deleted the old ones and made them all again and they're toggling fine. I'll have to be more careful in future.
