The Max Bible is an absolute "Must Have" book. Everyone with a copy of Max should have the Bible on their bookshelf. I don't know anything about the other book.

Also, check out the free video tutorials over at 3D-Palace. I learned a lot just by watching and working through those tutorials. There are loads of them and they are all free.

but is it a book to learn from or just a sort of printed help file? I'm asking because its a huge book! just over 1200 pages (hopefully they will be all images :D )

The Max Bible is the ultimate resource book. If you're looking for something to use as a beginners tutorial book, then you should probably try to find something else. That's why I mentioned the video tutorials. That's how I learned. I would watch the tutorials on my second monitor while working through them on my main screen. Then I would refer back to the Bible to look up certain tools or procedures.

Also, if you haven't done so already, check out the 3DS Max Tutorials that ship with the program. Go to the Help Menu and click on Tutorials. There's some great stuff in there.

I am very pleased with the tutorials bought from http://www.scottonstott.com/courses/maxviz.html. I first started working in 3ds Max, 9 month ago, and due to these tutorials, and some hard work (changing some values from min to max to see what is the difference in the render) now a can do something like this

Im looking to altering models that already exist and have been imported into max. I won't be creating these models as such but more a modification of them. Any ideas of books which may be of use here?

Im looking to buy the 3ds max bible but I need more books to help my learning.

Thanks

Well i would say that any of the newer books would work because you still need to use the basic functions that are used to create the models. You should try modeling a floor plan and that will give you enough practice to be able to edit the already finished models.. Its pretty simple to do once you get the hang of it.. My 13 year old son is almost faster then i am at autocad and he has only been using it for a few months and i have been using it on and off since 1987

A tutor in school ? Check out vismasters.com there online classes are awesome with brian smith. I have taken all the classes and recorded them with camtasia so i can watch again later. Brians books are a MUST if you are serious about architecture visualization. I have an extra copy if anyone is interested. He just released a intermediate - advanced book and it was worth the 6 month wait to get it. Shoot me an email if you need help with finding any of these sources.
