I build screened in porches here in Tennessee. A customer sent me a photo of the back of their house and asked about a 20X20 porch on the back of the house. I wasn't given any dimensions on the house, so I assumed the upstairs window was 3' wide and scaled the rest.

I know some of my windows are not drawn properly. I haven't figured out to get a window size that isn't in the window folder of the software, like a 4'0 6'0 window.

Looks great! I think you got the scale nearly right, now don't forget to bill him for the model :)

Bill him? I didn't know I could do that!

Just kidding. I don't have a dollar amount for this. It is what I call, cementing the sale!

Thanks for the compliment ; )

Looks good.....

Now if I may comment on the structure..(tell me to go jump if you want. :) )

looks like there are too many posts extending up for the roof , giving it a jail feel...
I can see the need for subfloor...but the roof can be designed for less
support...
Opening up the porch will give it a more outdoorsy (technical word there) feel....
You could brace the roof back to the original house...(diag. cross)
as the post are only pin jointed connections..

this is only a suggestion..:) but your sketch looks good/scale.

Thanks for the comment :)

Nice job on editing. What program did you use to do that?

On my defense, I have to screen this thing!

ahhh..screen, well then of course you'd need the posts

edit was just done quickly in paint...:)

hope I didn't offend..didn't mean to.

You did not offend me at all. I wanted some input.

I met with my potential customer today. And they added an outdoor fireplace and a 20X20 area covered with patio pavers. Cut out the double window and install french doors, brick up the old door...

And my scale was nearly right. After going to house an pulling my tape from the back door to the center of the new porch (10ft), it looks like it would center between the upstairs windows.

I think that means that my peak on the new roof is off by 8"s. *smile*

Hopefully I'll be able to provide some pictures of the finished product.

have you ever tried the "Photo Match" tool?

97catintenn

No, I'm not familiar with it. I'll take a look at that tool and see what I can learn. Thanks for the suggestion.

I also have an update to post as the job has changed. Added are the stone pavers approx 16X20, french doors/brick up the old single exit, and a nice outdoor fireplace.

Thanks for the comments ; )

My client wants to shave some of the labor and lay the fake rocks on the chimney himself. So, I modified my sketch.

Should I send it to him?

did you have a play with the photomatch facility by the way?

I produced a drawing of a conservatory my neighbour was planning to build, and saved a lot of time by parking the drawn conservatory in the right spot against the photograph (and you wouldn't have had to concern yourself with the 'wrong' windows by this method)

the above was my first attempt at any drawing with SketchUp - so it can't be difficult :)

Not yet, I haven't. I'm waiting for the next opportunity that I get to make a model. To go back and redo work that I've already created is just too painful. Mainly due to the hours that I have already invested in them.

But I think you're right about it being easier. I watched some videos online and was amazed at what they did.

edit: I removed the link and decided to just post the photos here.

Here is the before sketch.

Here is the after sketch showing the sunroom.
http://tonysoutdoorliving.net/images/2008/Jim/jimsaftersketch.jpg

And here it the finished project.

http://tonysoutdoorliving.net/images/2008/Jim/jimafterglass.jpg

Here are some of the dimensions. The big glass panels are 8' wide and 8' tall. In the picture below, the blue line represents the wall I built. And then I put a roof over the newly enclosed area, and added an independent hvac unit. My customer jokes with everyone, telling them that I promised that I would be finished by Christmas. Only I didn't say which Christmas!

Here is a simple project. Just a shed over the existing patio and screen it in.

And here is how it turned out.

The wife is spending $$$$ getting the house worked on. A covered and screened-in back porch is on the list as well as a deck and roof for the pool.

I need to do some measuring and take some photos and do my own house up in CAD. Our house was built in 1925. :?

Everything looks good, nice work.

Nice job. I'd consider scaling back the massiveness of the chimney by tapering the flue back to something more like half the size once you're above the fireplace mantel.
