Why do you need to explode it? You can still make changes with the block editor.

I always try to avoid groups in blocks if i'm honest.....there again I avoid groups in general too.
If it was me, i would 'save as' the drawing then try redefining the block in the original dwg as simply as possible.
But thats just my opinion

If you really need it exploded, just open it in the block editor and select Properties (do not select anything). Scroll down to where it says "Allow exploding" and change it to "Yes".

the properties managers always saves the day!

i only needed to edit a few block not all of them so i think refedit doesn't do what i wantall instances of one block will all update at any change to the block. If you are only wanting to change a few of the instances you will have to create a second block - or use a dynamic block.

yes but rather than creating a new block from scratch i was hoping to explode one, modify it then create a new block.
thanks :)

That's how most of my blocks are created - I very rerely start from scratch. The method SLW proposed should work if you use BEDIT rather than REFEDIT.

I rip my hair out (literally) whenever I see a block being exploded. It's a no-no as far as I'm concerned.

it depends what happens to it afterwards. If you explode it to create another similar block then thats ok but in general I would agree with you (apart from the ripping out of hair). We use a lot of subbies here and some of them seem to have an aversion to un-exploded blocks. The number of drawing borders comprising only lines that we now have is astonishing!

so are you saying that openning a block using BEDIT doesn't give you the same properties display that SLW posted?

I don't know - I've never used 2007. :)
Can you post a screen shot of your proprties display.
(I <CTRL>|Print Screen and then past into MS Paint to create the image.)

I have just opened a block (which was 'unexplodable') using AutoCAD 2007.
I followed SLW's information and got it to work no problem.
Is it possible for you to post a sample of the block(s) you are having trouble with ?
