I have recieved a couple of dwg- Files from an Architect. These Files contain views of a building (for example, one file contains the top view, another file the front view). So i have six views of the building and i need to have a 3D Object from this datas, which i can use in 3D Studio Max. Does anyone know if it is possible to convert six DWG-Files to a single 3D-Object and export this object to *.3ds within Autocad? All Files are made in AutoCad.

Thanks a lot!

Hello eddie and welcome. To put a simple answer to your question..no. You cannot simply convert views to a 3D image/model. However, you can create a 3D model from these views. You can use them as references for you model. It can be done but it will be difficult for a new ACAD user. Any way to share these files? If so perhaps someone here can offer some advice in the best way to do it.

Also, what version of ACAD are you using?

Take care :)

Ha, I knew that I saw an example of a similar task once before. Here is an example of how to take some ACAD views in 3D Studio to make a model. A similar apporach (to an extent) can be made with ACAD.

Of course, the texture mapping cannot be done but the basics are there for the modeling. See...

this took about 15 minutes..

Hope this helps.

Ive tried doing a similar thing with my old 2D layout plans, extruding all the walls. It never used to run smoothly as the the walls werent c0onstructed from polylines and all the door jambs have gaps

Yeah, you might have to "trace" over the existing lines. I made a new layer and traced over the lines on the above example. This way I knew that I had closed polylines. You will have to do a bit of drawing clean-up or setup but it goes pretty quick after that.
