I'm not sure if I am correct or its a big coincidence that something got messed up.

on ACAD2007 at work when I Isolate a layer everything turns off except that layer. On ACAD2008 on my home PC when I Isolate a layer everything turns very dim, leaving the layer I Isolates slightly brighter.

How can I change this back to the way 2007 does it. This is very important in my job because when i get drawings from an architect to design our system I have to clean the drawings up putting everything into my layers on HydraCAD which is a piping plug-in that works with autocad.

Yes by default it *looks* different (locks and dims other layers vs. turning them off), but there is a "settings" options when you start the command. Try this, change to "off" and it'll operate as you're used to.

This sounds very similar to the refedit command and the way it operates. When the layers that are dim are dimmed, can you selct them or will it only select the bright ones? If this is the case it is better than the old layer isolate !!! Layer isolate in 2006 and 2007 makes the other layers disappear and you are not quite sure if you need them. If the bright ones can be selected without the dim ones being selected, that is hell better because at least you can tell which ones you need to delete and the ones that you don't. We use layer isolate about 40 times a day plus, in 2006, and at least 10 times you need to undo this command because you have deleted some of the wrong lines. This new command in 2008 stops this from happening from what i can see.. I have not used 2008 yet either, so maybe I am wrong, but it would be nice if I was right.

You may wish to investigate the system variable LAYLOCKFADECTL and see what works best for you.

yeah, I would rather make it like 2007. I like having layer isolate turn off all the other layers instead of locking them. I have certain layers in my HydraCAD program that need to stay locked or I could lose a whole bunch of work. I understand that there is a layer unisolate button I would like to play it safe.

As well as using the layer isolate command you might find it useful to use AutoHide. This free little program will give you the ability to hide / isolate objects temporarily so that you can work on cluttered drawings easily:

This sounds weird, my isolate layer command works the same in 08 as it did for me in 07. It turns off all layers except the one I clicked on.

When you activate the layiso command, you will see in command line

Select objects on the layer(s) to be isolated or [Settings]:

If you select settings, then you can change it there.

Mine does too.
However, it is possible to have layer fading too, should you wish to.

Thanks guys, you know I never even thought to adjust the settings as it really worked the 1st time I ever used it to exactly the way I wanted it to. I might play with it a bit and see what I can screw..er I mean adjust ;)
