Are these contour objects or are they 3d polylines? I've noticed when trying to modify 3d poly's it can be a little slower. Not as slow as you're saying, but slower.
Explain your process.

I took my points, put them in a point group... ran my terrain modeler.... created contours.... they were fine for a while... but the more data i have added over the months it has caused my contours, when i adjust the grips to manipulate them to slow to a crawl. I cannot speed them up.

What are the specs of your machine? Sounds like you're stressing out your system.
One tip I can give would be to export your point group to a text point file, remove the point group from the surface data and replace it with the point file. If you don't need the points to actually be in your .dwg then remove them from the .dwg (not the project - surface data) if they are in there now. This may speed it up a hint, but not likely to resolve the problem completely.
Another option would be to add/remove/modify the data for your surface as opposed to modifying the contours. The contours should be a result of your surface (generally speaking) rather than the surface being a result of your contours.
You can also remove any breakline data, etc. from your .dwg (again, not from the project - surface data) that you don't need in there. You can always add it back to the .dwg if you need to.

Make sure Dynamic UCS is turned OFF.
