View Full Version : Flickering monitor

I just switched to a new machine at work and I got these irritating flashings in CAD; the screen keeps flickering every so often, like every 5-10s or so in a way as if you were running a regen command. Would installing new graphic card drivers help or is there something wrong with the setup? What do you think?

If you are using a microsoft mouse disable the "ipoint.exe" in your windows processes. Otherwise, play around with the settings for whatever mouse you use...this will usually solve the problem.
This usually only happens with microsoft mice.

Have you also looked at the refresh rate of the monitor? Sometimes changing the refresh rate to a higher Hz can also solve the problem. Some screens don't like adapter default settings with cad. Don't know why that is, but we solved it at work on several workstations updating the refresh rates. See if that helps.
We use microsoft mice and keyboards on most of the workstations at work and have had no such problems with displays. So if ipoint doesn't work try the refresh rate.

Thanks, That may be it - I just got rid of the microsoft mouse that I had oryginally with the machine, the sideways scroll wasn't much to my liking, haven't bother to uninstall the software...
@khama - yeah I've checked that, that's one of the first things I check with new equipment. Unfortunately the monitor is rubbish works fine only at 60Hz, at 75 the fonts look blurry :/

Especially with the newer mice and the newer versions of software that come with them....I have a feeling that if you uninstall the ipoint software you will be good.
The problem doesn't pop up if you are only using the drivers for the mice. The ipoint software is the most likely candidate.

AVITWeb,
I'm attempting to fix the same problem you assisted Little Bandit with. Could you take a look at this conversation and offer an answer?
When I tried to execute the disable of ipoint.exe in Task Manager, suggested, I got some warnings I didn't like and checked with my comp. guy. He didn't like the task manager use to disable and suggested another place (Add/Remove Hardware). Haven't tried it. The mouse idea is valid in my case because a new Microsoft mouse is part of the history, although, I believe the problem existed before the mouse purchase.
Confused here. When I go to Add/Remove Hardware, am I removing the entire mouse driver (Intellipoint 6.1), which is all I see in Add Remove Hardware or am I removing ipoint.exe, which, I would think, is the setup file for the mouse driver.
If I'm removing the mouse driver, what will serve as the mouse driver?

You should probably remove the mouse, go to add/remove programs, remove the ipoint software. (you can accomplish this with the keyboard) Then, reboot your machine. After the reboot, reconnect the mouse. Windows should notice its there and then install the drivers for it. You should be good at that point. Especially if it is a microsoft mouse. The setback for that is that you shouldn't update the software (Silly I know.) The other option is to go to a non microsoft mouse (I am using a Logitech and I see not issues with it - full software installed)

Thank you, AVITWeb, since I contacted you I've gotten a solution from my tech. guy. I will stick with that for now and give yours a try if I have problems. Here's what he suggested:
"If you click on the start button, and click on run, you will see a
dialog box where you can enter a command. In the white box enter
msconfig and click ok. MSCONFIG is a utility to make changes in your
computer. Click on the startup tab at the top of the window. Scroll
down until you see ipoint.exe and uncheck the box next to it. Click
OK and when you restart your computer it won't load ipoint.exe. You
may get a message from windows saying you are running an altered
startup but you can tell it not to display that message anymore."
Slight correction, scroll down until you see ipoint not ipoint.exe.
Quite similar to your solution.
Thanks again,

You need a monitor with a higher refresh rate.
