Try before you buy:
3DS Max 8 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=5903856)
3DS Max 9 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=7684178)
3DS Max 2008 (http://usa.autodesk.com/adsk/servlet/item?siteID=123112&id=9997279) - Review > cgchannel.com (http://www.cgchannel.com/news/viewfeature.jsp?newsid=6612)
But if you are planning on purchasing Max, why would you want to buy version 8 or 9? 2008 can do everything the previous versions can do, and then some.

Which version will you be getting? It seems they are releasing two versions, one for Entertainment and one for Design:

they're both using the same kernel and i will get to choose which one i want to install (from the same DVD) since i'm on subscription...i will also have the ability to unitnstall-reinstall between the two but i will most likely stick with the Design one as i have no use/ability to use SDK...other then the extra lighting tools in Desing and the SDK in Entertainment they're virtually indentical...
