I just got a new 64-bit 2 quad Q6600, 4mg ram/750GB HD. Nvidia 8500GT vid card, etc.....I will be running acad2009 MEP. Any concerns I should be aware of? I'm getting word that Vista ain't all that (even 64-bit version?)
thanks in advance.....

No idea on the specs but I like Vista & 2009 is made for it... MEP 2009 looks the dogs pods (except for the catalogs)... packed with new features.

Slight improvements have been made to Vista with the release of the latest service pack. Supposedly it runs a "little" quicker than XP. But given the specs of your computer I'd say you would have no problems to speak of. You can obtain more information at the AutoDesk website. There is a "white paper", thirty-two pages(?), just about Vista and AutoCAD free for the viewing. Good luck.

The main thing to be concerned about is that AutoCAD does not support OpenGL under Windows Vista. I have had real problems with my Nvidia cards with AutoCAD under Vista, particularly with visual styles and 3D. If your work is mainly 2D, you may be OK.

Yeah, I have had big trouble with my settings in cad with Vista on board. It gave me that much grief that I backstepped to Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2. Vista in my eyes needs alot more development before I make the change. We have 64 bit computers at work and Vista was removed from them and replaced with XP. The only problem is that the computers hardware is 64 bit and the software is still 32 bit, so that is a redundany in the first place. What ever you choose as your OS will be fine, but download the service packs regularly, because it is improving all the time, but Vista is FAR from perfect....

the Vista question crops up so often I think we need a FAQ for it

I have Vista with 2006 and I have limited issues, I'd only imagine that 2009 would at least be on the same page with Vista, altho if it's that much of an issue for you, then go with what you know will work...
XP Pro.
otherwise, Vista should be ok.

There are apparently people who have even gotten AutoCAD release 14 to work with Vista!

PCWorld just did a head-to-head between XP and Vista and XP was still the winner. Seems as though the service pack for Vista really did not make it any faster. That said, the same issue of PCWorld offered a number of tips to speed up Vista (April issue I believe). Sort of reminds me of the "tweaks" applied to Win98.

Yeah, I'm not a Vista fan. I insisted on XP Pro when having my computer built...

The interesting thing I noticed is that Autodesk are obviously promoting the use of Vista for AutoCAD 2009. All the promotional material I have seen from Autodesk for 2009 shows it being used with Vista - this despite that fact that the majority of acad users are still with XP. Has 2009 been optimised for Vista? It obviously is easier for Autodesk to deal only with a single OS in terms od support and development. Will 2010 drop support for XP?

AutoDesk makes no mention of 2009 being optimized for Vista. The last white paper regarding Vista and AutoCAD was for 2008. For further info start with this link:

Yes, I was wondering if this is subliminal promotion for Vista. AFAIK Autodesk have made no explicit claims for 2009 under Vista but the promotional material seems to be saying "if you're a modern kind of guy, you'll be using AutoCAD with Windows Vista"... Or am I just reading too much into it?
