keeping constraints of a sub-assembly

I'm trying to figure out sub-assemblies. When I place a sub-assembly into another assembly file, how do I get the sub-assembly to move how it's constrained in it's own file? I made a hinge in an assembly so I could have the rotating motion, but when I place the hinge in the main assembly, the hinge just moves as if were completely solid. Any help??

RMB on the subassembly and select Flexible.

Whether adaptivity is on or not is irrelevant because selecting either adaptivity or flexible toggles the other off.
