View Full Version : Wrapping sheet metal over fixture shape

Gentlemen,
Long time autocad user short time Inventor user< I design snow plows.
I have a .188 skin tack welded to a 4X4 angle, we bolt through both to the fixture that has multi radius plates, then full the skin over the fixture shape.
Now for the question:
In Inventor how do I get the skin to mate-up to the fixture plates?

Is the constrain tool not working?

Laser,
I tried using the constraints to make the skin "fit" the fixture.
I also tried using loft, came out looking like a flaming bag of Pooh!
The pdf file is now too large to post, so is a jpg. E-mail me direct and I will send inventor files, what ever it takes to get the skin drawn.
Any suggestions?

You can zip the files and attach them here. I suggest pulling the red End of Part marker to the top of the browser in the ipt files, save and in Windows Explorer right mouse button on the filename and select Send to Compressed (zipped) folder. Attach the resulting *.zip files here.
If I follow what you are after I would have derived the parts as Body as Work Surfaces and used that to create the skin. About 10 minutes of work and fully adaptive.
In the assembly file it would be 3 simple Mate-Flush constraints with the origin planes.

I zipped it, 1.21 MB the limit is 250KB?

Zip each individual file or find a forum with a larger attachment limit.

Here are the zipped files. There should be 7 but I only see 5.

The last two files where too large, 263.7 KB and 299.3 KB.
If you have trouble opening 00121035 it is because 00121043 is missing, It was a flaming back of pooh anyway.

I have what I need but I will be very busy over the next two days.
I will prepare an example of the entire assembly for you but for now I suggest you read this document - http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2007/MA105-1L%20Mather.pdf
I would not accept any work with Sketch1 unconstrained.
I will work up an example of your hole placement with 2 dimensions -
as it is your part looks very suspicious (see attached).

The hole locations you speak of have nothing to do with skin wrapping over the fixture plate. Those hole are used to plug weld a spacer between center two fixture plates. This creates a gap allowing the welder to grind (fine tune) the skin.

I didn't figure that the hole had anything to do with the problem - I just wanted to point out what I see as a mistake.

As I work towards a solution I will have to fix your files.
I thought you made the placement of these holes way too complicated and Sketch1 was not constrained to the origin.
Pull down the red End of Folded marker in the browser (not sure why you used a sheet metal part for this - sheet metal is uniform thickness, angle iron is not).

Shouldn't these dimensions be the same?
And why such "odd" dimensions when stuff can't be manufactured to those implied tolerances?
Why dimension the .75 circles over and over and over and over again instead of using an equal constraint. Doesn't that really clutter up the sketch and make it very difficult to edit if you decided to change the size of the holes?

Holes should always be a feature and preferably a pattern placement.
I concurr that the holes need to be constrained, preferably with a 'functional' dimension.
However I can't open the file to look at the skin problems, I have IV7 here.
Hopefully JD Mather can help.
