New Material to 3d object

I'm learning 3d max 2008 on my own. First assignment would be to apply new/custom material to the 3d drawing which i created in autocad 2006. Since this is custom material, how do i grab a jpg file that shows custom colors and dropped it into 3d max material editors?? thanxx for the response.
