Hi Gandhi... like most things in AutoCAD there many ways to skin this proverbial cat... 1 would be to extrude the yellow into a solid then use the subtract/intersect commands to achieve the desired results... tho' someone else is bound to come up with an alternative/simpler method :)

Slice would probably work as well.

If I follow the question, explode the gear and delete the outer circle. Type BPOLY - select the Pick Points button, click anywhere in the yellow region. It will generate a polyline that you can then EXTRUDE to make your part.

I am going to guess..this???

Do you want the file..easy.... or do you want to learn how to do it..not to hard....???

Yes can u send me the file. Also tell me how to do it

No I am not going to send you the file..that would be too easy..you are going to learn how to do it on your own..First hint on doing it yourself..move the UCS to the center of the drawing by using the object UCS..you should be able to trim what you want after exploding the gear..after you trim away what you don't need..close polyline the shape that you want then extrude..try to do it yourself..

Mike I moved Object UCS to the centre but could not trim the remaining leaving yellow

Thats good so far..The gear and the white circle is grouped together as a region.select the gear and explode it..that will reduce the region to polylines and a circle...now you can trim away what you don't want..to make the area you do want..create a closed polyline with the lines that make the area you want and then extrude it..

Why do people move the UCS all over the place to do everything? I NEVER move it. I can see how it's necessary for some functions, esp. more complex 3D editing, but I can't see how it helps anything in this case.

I made the exact same thing as Mike, without moving the UCS.

The reason that I moved the UCS to the place as shown was that after I trimmed the part to the shape needed,I tryed to make it a closed poly line..but got a message that it was not parallel to the UCS..starting over with the original drawing and first moving the UCS using the object UCS solved that problem..I was able to make the closed poly line to be able to make the extrusion..

Hmmm... I never got that error.

Then again, did BPOLY exist in 2000?

Yes it does exist in 2000..But I have never used it..why don't you get in here and explain it to us..

BPOLY is a very cool command I found a month or so ago while looking at a 3d tutorial.

Upon entering the command, you get the first dialog box. Select Pick Points, which will allow you to pick any internal point and generate the poly line for the area you want to extrude (second pic).

This generates your polyline, which you can then extrude just like normal, and you saved a lot of trouble trying to play with the geometry. (pics 3 and 4)

That is what this forum is about..Thanks Hoozin..with this method you have retained the original region and created the new closed poly to extrude..Good work..Mike

My pleasure and thank you. I thought it was one of the coolest things I'd ever seen the first time I saw it.

When I first attacked this particular model, I spent a VERY long time futzing with the geometry in the drawing, culminating with an extrusion of the full gear, SUBTRACTed from an extrusion of the sector that himatech was looking for. Same result, but a lot more work.

I thought about it for a second and figured it would probably be easier to work with the geometry in 2D and extrude it, similar to how you did it. Halfway through I remembered BPOLY and started over. Was done in less than a minute.

It's based on the coding for Boundary Hatching (BHATCH) I think, since when you get an error, it tells you that it was a hatch error.

Referring back to my comment about the UCS, I meant it as I don't really understand it beyond what it actually does. Using it is, at this point in time, beyond me (similar to most rendering). I apologize if my comment above seemed a bit sharp.

Himatech...were you able to do it..how about some screen shots to see your work??

Yes. Mike Thanks a lot for your help. Initially I couldn't under stand at all about that Explode command itself. I was thinking that You are asking me to explode but not as command. At lats when I exploded I could simple remove all the Unnecessary lines and ultimately I got what I want as I shown in scrshot. I thank you Mike once again and I thank Hoozin also for his involvement ans interest.

Thanks a lot to forum
