i've been using autocad for my work for several years but now want to get my own full version for possible future contract work. i'll need the 3d components but i don't think any of the other plug ins, at least right now. can anyone suggest the best source in the USA? i assume going straight to autodesk will be more than a dealer..... plus i'm not after the most up to date version, say 2006-2007.

I can't recommend you any dealer because I am not in the USA but I boubt you can (legally) buy any older version.
I may be wrong.

now that would be mildly annoying. especially since i'm trying to be above board about it and not getting pirated software. not being able to pick up someones old unused software seems totally unfair. oh well... life in the big world.

Marky, I recently bought 2008... but the dealer I purchased from did have a few seats of 2007 left. You MAY find one that will still have an older version available to you.
Whether you buy from a licensed dealer or directly from Autodesk, it costs the same. (I, too, had hoped dealers would offer price breaks but they don't -- I asked around).
It'll set you back $4,000 no matter where you buy it... unless you get an illegal copy. :(

...this had been discussed many times here - a search will give it all!
the essence is, as i understand it, you pay for 'a licence to use' the software - not 'the software', so you can't pay for an old copy of 'it'...
...the phrase 'short-and-curlies' comes to mind...

If you are doing 3D you don't want anything prior to r2007.

How about IntelliCAD? Most pro versions do 3D and autolisp and cost less that $600US. Google a few sites (like CADopia, iCADsales) or simply Googlr IntelliCAD
Most sites have a free demo available to try, so you're not out of pocket until you try it.
I use ADT 2008, Civil3D 2008, LDD 2008, and plain ACAD 2008 as well as ProgeCAD 2008. My ProgeCAD can keep up with my plain ACAD just fine.

If you buy 09, which is discounted at most places for the next few weeks, then you can legally use an older version with that licence even if you have not previously owned it.
