3D CAD rendering

So here's the situation:

My company is doing some work for a LEED project, and we need to calculate areas that will be shaded at certain times of day. I know how to set my geographic location, time of day, date, etc. I have some 3D solids already placed where the need to be in model space.

My question is: does anybody know how to show the shadows created by these 3D objects?

I would really appreciate any help!!

First if you are using 3d max 9 you can place in a camera and it would casted a shadow pass that object for you using the time of day. that is what my 3d Operator told me.
