Split part BUT not all

Im trying to split this part but not the base, this is the normal part split:

is there a way to do it? this image below shows what i want to do, i want to keep tha base marked with the red square, at left its just copy pasted the full splited and non splited image to show how i want it to look.

Can you zip and attach the ipt file?
If I follow what you want to do create a construction surface to terminate the "split" and Extrude-Cut to the surface.

In the attached file pull down the red End of Part marker in the browser.
I would recommend that you stop whatever you are doing and go through all of the Inventor tutorials at the link in my signature - starting with MA105-1L.
