View Full Version : Can't rotate in 3D?!?!

In AutoCAD 2007 (the full version) on a machine at work, picture the scene...

Draw a square, extrude it, go to the side view, highlight the box and try to rotate it but all it seems to do is flip over as if it was being mirrored. I then realised that if you imagine the X and Y axis as it is on the Top (birds eye) view, instead of what it shows (as when you go to the side view the axis alters doesn't it) then it is rotating it but it's doing it as if I was still looking from the original top view (ie just in 2D mode).

I've probably explained that a lot more complicated than it is so sorry if I've confused anyone! I work in AutoCAD Classic mode and never had a problem like this before, tried switching to 3D modelling and weirdly that worked for the first time I tried it then stopped again, I'm guessing a variable may have turned itself off as they usually do with no reason. Any help anyone??? Thanks in advance.

Have you tried using the 3DRotate command instead?

If you're interested in AutoCAD variables then take a look at this website authored by Lee Ambrosius (Hyperpics.com):

http://www.hyperpics.com/system_variables/

It's a list of 654 variables in AutoCAD spanning Release 12 through 2008.

Explanations of the variables themselves (in PDF format) is available to those who sign up for a free membership. Check it out.

Thank for that ReMark I'll have a look in a minute. The 3dRotate doesn't work though, it's weird cos it started working for a few minutes then stopped again, quite annoying!

Just had another look, what seems to be happening is it's keeping the axis as if I was still looking from a top view even when I go to a side view, so even if I try to draw a rectangle on a side view, all it does is let me travel across the X (or Y) coordinate and not up into the Z. It's as if it only thinks I have an LT version of AutoCAD, yet it still lets me go to the side views so this is ending up being quite confusing, any ideas??

You need to be one of the isometric views to 3DRotate.

Go to a side view on a drawing, the XY axis is meant to reset so that what was the Z axis on the top view would then be the Y axis as it has all swapped due to changing the view...but it's not doing that, when I change to a side view my XY axis then says (for example if I click on the 'Front' button) X and Z, it's not changing?? Because of this when I try to draw a rectangle in side view all I get is a line..it's kind of hard to explain without it sounding a hell of a lot more complicated then it is!! I think I'm just going to reinstall, might be easier!
