guys!! :D

i am planning to buy a new PC. :)
Recently i have purchased one AMD Athlon 64, 2600 with 80 GB HDD, ASUS motherboard, 128 mb nvidia Graphics CARD etc.

:?

i need one more where i can run applications like AutoCAD 2005, ADT 2004, 3dsmax 7.0, photoshop CS, Maya and other graphics utilities.

my vendor suggests me for intel 3.0 HT..i want to think beyond "Intel".

what kind of configuration i should go for? AMD 3000 or Intel 3.0 HT?

pls. suggest.

I have been using AMD processors for years and I've always considered them to be excellent. No compromise, better value for money - what more could you ask?

I would recommend AMD Athlon 64 3000 with 1GB RAM and a good graphics card. I go for Matrox but if you want to play games as well, you might wamt to look at ATI.

I would almost 100% agree with CADTutor except that I have been using a 64-bit ready (yes that is correct) Intel P4 3.6 EM64T H.T. chip for the last few months and I am really impressed. There are as of right now 2 main factors that but the P4 over the AMD 64 line (Athlon 64, Athlon FX and Opteron)...

1. Hyper Threading. It works. You will not need it on say something like AutoCAD but jump to Photoshop, 3D Studio Max and Maya. You will see a difference. I did a few test renders with several programs (Vue, Cinema 4D, Max) and Photoshop with HT on and off and there was a difference. Imagine you get a 25 second reduction in a single frame render. Image an animation with several hundred frames. To get this on the AMD side you have to get a dual cpu Opteron.

2. PCI Express graphic cards. As far as I know you cannot get a PCI Express chip set for an AMD 64 motherboard...yet. It will happen but I am un aware of them yet. PCIe is a much faster interface that 8x AGP will ever be. In fact AGP is starting to be phased out in many suppliers. Dell being one of them.

Not sure if you can get an AMD motherboard that supports DDR2 ram yet either. Check on this too.

Now the one big reason for AMD, and it is a good one, is their price. They do have the best "bang for the buck" value out there. They also perform better when you compare clock speed to clock speed. Remember that an Athlon 3000 is not a 3 GHz chip but really a 1.8 GHz chip but it will run with a 3 GHz from Intel ;)

64 bit chips, do they really matter? Not yet. Win XP 64 is in free beta stage right now. I am not sure of any 3D or graphic apps that have a 64 bit version yet either except for I believe Lightwave. They are putting one out soon. You really cannot go wrong right now but just plan ahead.
Good luck :)

EDIT:
Check that, you can get a PCIe motherboard for AMD now. nVidia offers them now.

thank you for valuable comments!! :D

this was something new for me..

i w'd surely make it a point to discuss above issues with my vendor..

unfortunaltely..vendors here just know how to sell..but they dont educate clients well..

CADTutor is for that: :) Hurray!!

No, they don't do that very well do they ;) Just whatever get them paid :x

I would also check at some 3D Max forums as well as Maya forums since you listed these applications as well. You might can get some feed back from current users there on hardware :)

Also, if you want some good hardware advice and reviews, look at:

Tom's Hardware http://www.tomshardware.com/

Anandtech http://www.anandtech.com/

...and for F7, take a look at this article (http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2303) describing the AMD roadmap for 2005. You want dual core? You got it 8)

Sweet!! The 1 sore spot I have for AMD right now seems to be getting fixed :) Good job on the Tom'S Hardware and Anandtech links. Two very good sites.
I still prefer AMD as well, if I had the the choice at work it would have been an AMD as well but I am not disappointed with the P4. It does very well.
