I seem to have a problem with the 3D side of AutoCAD.

In the "Bible" they directed me to draw a helix in 3D drawing, and then they tell you to zoom in and pan etc. The line that makes up the helix becomes a broken line, I can still sort of make out the spiral, but not clearly. Does this mean that my graphics card is not sufficient enough for 3D, or is there some other problem?

Please upload the drawing so someone can check its performance on their machine. It is possible that is is graphics card related, but there may be some tweaks you can make to improve it.

How do I upload it, when I clicked on the insert image button, it asked me for a website URL.

See the forum FAQ, Reading and Posting Messages.

You'll have to meet some CADTutor criteria re: acceptable file types and sizes. The file is then uploaded and you can attach it to your thread. Must be in Advanced mode.

The .dwg is 308KB and the specs for the upload is 250KB, Which is the best program to use to modify it and how?

Did you purge the drawing yet? That might get the size down somewhat.

By the way, what are the "specs" on your graphics card and how much RAM is on the motherboard?

I don't have a single clue, is there somewhere on the computer that I can find this info?

You are dealing with an engineer here, not a computer boffin.

What does purge mean?

In Autocad, with the drawing open, type PURGE at the command line. A dialog will open that will allow you to get rid of all unnecessary blocks, dimstyles, layers, linetypes, etc. from the drawing. This can reduce your filesize.

Click on your Windows "Start" button and select "Settings" and then select "Control Panel". When the Control Panel window opens, select "System". This will open a "System Properties" window.

On the "General" tab, you will see specs about your processor and the amount of RAM you have.

On the "Hardware" tab, select "Device Manager". When the Device Manager window opens, click on "Display Adapters". This will show you the graphics card you have installed.

Thanks for the help.

I was speaking to an AutoCAD instructor here in Italy yesterday and he told me to try changing the settings under Tools, Options, Display and then to change my "Display resolution" attributes and this seems to have resolved the issue.

He said I should try changing the "Arc and circle smoothness" to 2000, "Rendered object smoothness" to 1

Then under "Display performance" I should make sure that the first and fourth attributes were disabled and the second, third and fifth were enabled.

This seems to have worked with me, and I hope it can help anyone else with the same or similar problem.
