Quite honestly I don't know how you've all managed without this for so long. CADTutor now has a Facebook group. Those of you with an existing Facebook account can go straight to the CADTutor group (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=15431047897) page and join. At this stage I'm not quite sure what we'll do there but I understand that many young people are really "into" it.

I don't use facebook and I am sure many others do not also.
Should there be any lengthy discussions regarding CAD on facebook, will there be any duplication onto this site for people who do not use facebook?
Thanks.

The answer is "I don't know". It's a step in the dark for me. We'll just see how it goes.

Since I find Facebook just a For-Fun kind of thing, I don't see the need for any real links between the CADTutor offical homepage and the Facebook group... it's just for fun Leigh, no need to get huffy about it :)

I apologize if I misunderstood you LCE, I just don't think you need to take a Facebook group as serious as I read from your post that you do.

That is Ok.
I have no objection to it at all. It is just I have seen things like this go pear shaped before, with discussions happening on Facebook (or similar) rather than just using it for socialising, then the rest of the community (at CADTutor) misses out.
Like I said, no objections, I think it is a great idea for socialising, just so long as that is all it is.

So, James,
I joined up tonight to see what was going on, and rapidly got nowhere. :( So I gave up.
No doubt my daughter knows how to use that place. :P

That's right - it is just for fun. No "official" CADTutor business will go on there. I just figured that since the Chat forum is so popular, it might be nice to expand into a community space. If things do go "pear-shaped", then I just pull the plug and say, "well, that was an interesting experiment".:)

Wow, the things you learn.
I just did a search on my old college, still going through it all, up to page 42. I have already found 2 blokes I went through college with.
Truly amazing.

I only use it for keeping in touch with people who only use that... people I have met on my travels mostly. It's quite good when you get a few friends 'cos it then starts suggesting people that you might know based on how many of your friends these people know... but as an application hoster it's rubbish IMO & insecure (so beware what info about yourself you post on it)... I'll have a look at the CADTutor page later but I see this as my main port of call :)

That the groups are pretty useless other than mild amusement at the strange random groups that people join. And the consequences of joining some groups and then leaving them. ;)

Hmmm, well I for one don't have a MySpace nor a Facebook. Nor am I apart of any other social networking site, other than this forum board, and two others that I regularly go to. If people wanna find me, they have to do it the old fashioned way. I honestly have no interest (at the moment) to have a Myspace/Facebook page. Who knows what lies ahead in the future though.
And I'm not doing it to boycott it or anything, just simply no urge to sign up for one. Am I the only one who is like this in the world? Seems everyone else has one. :)

Well you can't please all of the people all of the time...
I have to admit that (with my current lifestyle) I don't need social networking but CADTutor is a big community and so it's just there for those who want to use it - kind of like an outpost. Social networking may just be a passing fad - it's certainly the zeitgeist. I don't have any grand plan but if it helps more people find CADTutor - great.
Oh, and for those of you who don't intend paying a visit, this is what you're missing...

David,
I have absolutely no problems with social networking sites. I don't do is because I just don't have the urge to sign up for one. I just don't think about it. I think it's a great idea personally for CadTutor to be on one of the sites. :)

I feel the same. Well I don't hate social networking sites. My problem is I get addicted to it & than my work starts suffering. I was part of one the site(which was slightly differnt than face book, well I heard of face book thru this thread only.) before I discovered cad tutor
but now I visit it very less & do not interect much. bcs my all free time goes here & some of the work time as well but I am learning a lot here so, I don't mind that.

Thanks, David. It's okay, I finally got there. Now I am one of the members, for what it's worth. But at least there is Dave, Chris and me (from the regulars here). I'm still not sure about this, but I guess time will tell. :P I really hope it works...I still have to explore my old college mates (and maybe even my old girlfriends), but we wont go there!!! o:)
Edit....
And James....Stilljames.....James Still. Sorry, mate, took me a bit to figure that out. :P

For what it's worth, over the weekend, and particularly this morning so far, 3 troops from Facebook have joined the CADTutor group.
Now I guess, David, you have to figure out what we talk about/do, in order to keep the interest there.
This may just work...... o:)

I think this is a great idea to raise awareness of the site... I do use Facebook, but probably won't visit the site group much, just it'll be useful for a lot of the next generation CAD users who are the biggest user of Facebook (I think). So, David, I think it's a good idea, the worst that can happen is that CADTutor will gain more members? I think that's surely a good thing?
Also, for anyone concerned about missing out, you can set up a Facebook account and solely use it for CADTutor- you don't have to participate in any other apps on the site, nor do you have to accept any friends.

So for those that have already joined the facebooked group, anything interesting going on?

That is the basic logic behind this development. Looked at cynically, you might say it's just an exercise in promotion. Alternately, it may have positive benefits that aren't obvious at this time.
Never mind then.

As previously mentioned, I don't expect any excitement on the Facebook group and it certainly won't take anything away from the forum - this remains the focus of attention. Why do it? Because we can and because there's really nothing to lose.

I wouldn't say it was a cynical thing to promote the site- it means there will be more people on hand to answer any questions. :)
More problems to solve and more answers to learn from is for me the fundamental draw to the site, even though I rarely solve the problems, I still try...

And I agree. There have been quite a few people join the group, that I can't connect to CADTutor. So that has to be a good start. We just have to do something to really get their interest. And head them our way.
I'm still waiting for my daughter to ask me what CADTutor is.....so I can show her. :P
Who knows...she may even join CADTutor...then look out everyone....

I quite like facebook as you get to know other people better. I learn about hobbies that other people do and books they've read, it inspires me I really think I'm gonna enjoy facebook with CADTutor, as I can imagine it's going to be less formal and more 'getting to know each other' and it's about time. Some of us have known each other for Years. ( I Joined in 2003)
I can also understand your thoughts on it tho LCE There is a not-so good side to facebook as I recently found out. My past caught up with me and my daughters father got in contact, leaving Mr Skeeps pretty upset. But I've been inticed back with the CADTutor group and reset permissions so I now have more control over who can view my profile. I think that you've got to read through all the blurb when opening up any social networking sites or lead a squeaky clean life.

Just registered for the forums and also just joined the group today...have quite a few friends in the same classes at me and this forum has proved to be a valuable resource. Figured a few of my friends might see it in my page and use it too.

possibly because those people who are naturally technically minded aren't usually the same ones who like to splatter their life story all over the internet

You can still utilise Facebook without "splattering your life story all over the internet"... believe me, if my life was that interesting, I wouldn't discuss it with the world either...
I just use Facebook to keep in touch with friends etc - good for when at uni also.
