The best advice I can give you is to use the help files (for what they are worth) and use the software. The best way to learn Inventor is by using it.

Best places for the book are Ebay or even the Autodesk website, but yes as said above do use the help files, also to the tutorial they will help, join the cad geek.com site and learn all the vids they have also the In the machine blog on the autodesk website is a great place to be, JD Mather has few tutorials and a great PDF to teach you Inventor. If possible take a course, by far the best way to learn it.
Edit, check out youtube they have basic beginner vids.

Students can get the latest release of Inventor for free from http://engineersrule.org
others (in some parts of the world) can download free Inventor LT from http://labs.autodesk.com the surface tutorials will work in LT.
But you need to first concentrate on more basic stuff. See Help>Tutorials and Help>Skill Builders
also see

the best advice i can give you is, yes look at the help files and get a tutorial book but the main thing to do is:
play about with inventor press stuff which you dont have the slightest what they are or do, just teach yourself the basics anything you are'nt sure of play about with it and learn it your way
sounds childish and abit weird but it works

Students can only get it free if their school/college/uni actually have legal copies of the software.

I'm curious where you got the information that the school must have the software?
My information is:
Any students anywhere in the world can download the free software. It doesn't matter if their school uses Autodesk products or not.
If the student has an edu email address they can simply sign up and download when their registration is approved (instantly in most cases).
If the student does not have an edu email they can click the appropriate link and enter their teacher information. Then the teacher will recieve a code for the student to gain access.
I supply the code to prospective college students who are still in H.S. as a recruiting tool.
