I drew the attached part.
Then realised that there is a circle or face excuse not knowing what you call it behind second sloping face.
I want to delete it but i keep getting an error
[ERROR] Cannot modify the library file F:\My Documents\Acad\Projects\Traub A25\Workgroup\collet.ipt <FwRes.dll(1832)> [r:\core\fw\Main\FWxApp.cpp, line 2783]
So how do I delete it?
Or start again.
Crompton
Ok now when i try to attach it I get invalid file.
So much for inv.

Ok now when i try to attach it I get invalid file.
Open the file.
Drag the red End of Part marker in the browser as high as it will go.
Save Copy As to some convenient location (like the desktop).
Go to the desktop and right click on the file name.
Select Send to Compressed (zipped) Folder.
Attach the resulting *.zip file here.
Sounds like you saved it as a library file.
Think of it like this, you don't normally go into a library and start editing book - say by tearing out pages.
How much training did you get in Inventor?
I suggest you read this document. Some of it you will have to do manually in r7 but the principles are the same. http://home.pct.edu/~jmather/AU2006/MA13-3%20Mather.pdf

Are you using the correct project file? I get the same error when I try to edit a part that is in a library folder as designated by a different project file. Be sure that you are using the project file you originally used to create the ipt.

Ok first I have not had any real training in Inventor.
I learn by try this it dont work read help try that read help.
I have an old version of inventor version 7. it came from work, it was an old version that was not being used any more.
I am not part of a multimillion pound global company just an ordinary guy who wants to draw something.
but i know that all you proffesionals out there use Inventor version latest with bells. but i cannot afford things like this and freebies from work are best i can get.
like who can afford £1223 for autocad 2009 LT?
sorry not me. and how much is AutoCad 2009? inventor?
I am not on a big expence budget. so the copy of Autodesk 2002 that I have may be old but i can still draw a drawing with it.
So with all the tutorials out there that you can follow that use inventor version 11 aint much use here.
I cannot afford £2099 for a training package and online support from one company and that does not include any software so that why I ask stupid questions on this forum.
Ok i open inventor. check my project it appears in correct place and ticked.
I open a new drawing.
I draw 7 lines, dimension them, save them as a drawing name (sorry part name to those that want it that way) close drawing.
Open said drawing (sorry part name to those that want it that way) try to alter something and get an error message appear -
[ERROR] Cannot modify the library file F:\My Documents\Acad\Projects\Traub A25\Workgroup\collet-1 sketched.ipt <FwRes.dll(1832)> [r:\core\fw\Main\FWxApp.cpp, line 2783]
ok so what am i doing wrong
And yes I have tried draging end of part to top
And yes read digested what i could from the pdf file and still get this problem.

I have an old version of inventor version 7.
There are older tutorials from Autodesk University (AU) handouts here
http://www.augi.com/education/auhandouts.asp?page=726
and more here

...like who can afford £1223 for autocad 2009 LT?
Autodesk Inventor LT 2009 is free
http://labs.autodesk .com (currently limited to certain parts of the world but to me made available to more countries soon)
I don't know anything about AutoCAD LT, never seen it, never used it.
......the copy of Autodesk 2002 that I have...
I thought Autodesk was a company name, not a software name. Are you referring to ownership of Autodesk stock?
......So with all the tutorials out there that you can follow that use inventor version 11 aint much use here....
Most stuff has not changed in Inventor since at least v7, so I think the basic principle of any tutorial could be figured out even if the icons and options have changed a bit.
...I open a new drawing.....
Are you doing File>Open or File> New?
What is the path to your template files?
And is it *.ipt or *.idw or other?
...I draw 7 lines, dimension them, save them as a ...
What is the path to the location you are saving the file?
...alter something and get an error message appear -
[ERROR] Cannot modify the library file F:\...collet-1 sketched.ipt
Can you zip and attach collet-1 sketched.ipt here?

I presume it is .ipt but dont know
I put the part or drawing in a zip
Now I discover that all files are uneditable.
So I just think I will forget this damn program and stick to Autocad

I can open the file and edit it just fine. (try moving it from your library folder to the desktop and then open)
I noticed that the sketch was not constrained to the origin.
You might want to read the document I suggested earlier.
Can you find anybody in your area who knows Inventor that could sit with you for an hour? I'm betting the frustrations could be quickly erased if you had someone show you the Inventor techniques vs the AutoCAD techniques. Then you would be off and running with far fewer hurdles in learning the program on your own.
I remember when I was in a similar situation trying to teach myself Pro/E. Someone who had experience showed me a few tricks and then it was the same as SolidWorks, Inventor or even AutoCAD. Geometry is geometry - its just the little tricks in the program that trip you up.
Where are you located at? If you could download the free Inventor LT 2009 it would be a lot easier to help you out.
Notice in the image that I constrained your sketch to the origin. Makes additional features (like the patterned slots) easier to add. I changed your radial dimensions to diametral dimensions - but that is simply a preference of mine (I avoid doing calculations whenever possible or enter the equation and let Inventor do the calculations.)
I would have done the part in AutoCAD essentially the same.

There was a tutor at local college but he not there no more and replacement asks what is inventor do we have it?
I am in UK so free INVENTOR 2009 LT no good for me.
ok so i move file to desktop and open it and i can edit it.
now i have 49 drawings on my desktop and if i move them i cannot edit them.
how do i tell inv where things should be.
or do i leave on desktop?
or put into recycle bin.
So I draw a part with some point of it at 0,0,0?
How do you constrain a part of drawing to 0,0,0?
I just grab a vertice and pull it to 0,0,0 hopefully with grid snaps on it gets there.
That is if it will move at all.
The drawing in autocad has the slots in it.
Thanks
David

Do you really mean, "...if I move them now I can edit them."

...do i leave on desktop?
No, you can put thenm anywhere (except your library folder).
...I just grab a vertice and pull it to 0,0,0 hopefully with grid snaps on it gets there.?
No. You have not read the document I suggested. You Project Geometry and add a Coincident Constraint.

RMB click the Axis in the bottom left pane when you start a new part file, that will constrain to 0,0,0.
PS
Any question is aceptable as any lever of user is allowed to ask questions.

Nick,
Can you elaborate on this procedure?
