What's the best way to copy a viewport to several layouts in multiple files? This is for a legend I need on each of 30+ sheets...

Just a simple copy/paste will work. You'll likely need to activate the vp after pasting it in using mview > on

Well I tried that (it has worked in the past for me) but this time I get an "*undefined block 1-#" error and it will not paste.

Any thoughts?
Other methods I can try?

Why not CHSPACE the modelspace entities to paperspace on 1 layout, and make a WBLOCK of it, and then you can XREF it in?

If I do that, will it be easy to update it as the project evolves? That's why I usually use a VP to a legend in modelspace... new teritory for me here...

Sure will. That may be your best bet if the legend will change. This way you only have to change the "wblocked out" file and the changes will reflect on all drawings you xref it into.

Hmm. So I xref it into each sheet directly without a VP? Same as I do my Titleblocks I guess. I think I understand now. It will be easy to make sure it gets put in the same place on each sheet too...

Thanks fellas!!:D

to do that try seting your insbase to that file & than always x-ref it at 0,0 so it will appear at correct position.

I do that for title block often.

Yep I do that too. Good thought though...

I've run into a different problem when I try to copy viewports from one layout tab, and paste them into another using common basepoints so that the viewport is in the same place on all tabs. When I do this, autocad won't let me open up the viewport in the new layout, yet it identifies it as a viewport, I usually have to trace over it and convert the new object into a viewport, adding more steps and kind of defeating the purpose of copying viewports (well, at least they end up in the same position on each layout tab). Anybody else have this problem?

Nevermind, I tried the mview >on command and it solved my problems, well almost. You still have to clip the larger viewport around the new one, if you want to be able to select and open up either one by just double clicking, otherwise, the larger viewport will take precedence over the smaller one, and you will have to use mview>on again in order to access it.

As mentioned by rustisilo you will have to activate it. to do that, select viewport right click>display viewport object > yes. or you can change it to yes in properties pallette also.
