I was planning to buy full auotcad license but than I thought i would like to learn REVIT after 3 months, once i have additional staff in place & so i thought to buy revit bcs it comes with full auotcad, which I can use untill I learn revit. When I talk to the deler he said, revit is too expansive, it is more than double the price of auotcad at the moment and he also told me that it is compulsory to buy subscription with revit whch will add yearly cost, which is not good if I don't need revit much.
Now My question is is subscription really compulsory with revit?
what should I do? the deler is suggesting to buy autocad & he is saying that when revit has any special schemes which they will have in next 6 motnhs, that time you can upgrade to revit & you just have to pay the diff. in cost but you will get the special offer available at that time. there is no special offer in revit at the moment.

Double the price? Quotes that I have got recently don't show that. I think the Revit Suite (Revit + ACAD) is very good value. Who is this dealer, someone from the back of a van?
I have also not heard of compulsory subscription...but I may be wrong.
Any chance of checking with another reseller, and let them each know that you are talking to other resellers (always seems to help the price).

The deler I am talking to is the best(most fampou & oldest) in my town(its a small city)
when i bought LT in december I had chcecked with 3 dealers & this one ave me the best price.
The auotcad is 90,000 INR whereas reivt is 2,00,000 INR+30,000 INR anual subscription.
I have been delaying it since 3 months already.
Just to be sure, I will check with other 2 dealers tomorrow.

AutoDesk have different rules in different countries so it is very possible that your dealer is telling you the truth for India.

The fact that each new version of Revit uses a new .rvt file format which is completely incompatible with earlier versions implicitly requires you to keep current. It clearly shows that Autodesk's business model for the future is subscription-based, and I believe it is one of the reasons Revit hasn't been more widely adopted.

Not sure if Revit is ONLY sold via subscription, or whether your reseller was just looking out for your best interests.

But its easy to "upgrade" your model file isn't it Andy?
I've been learning Revit for a while, and when I changed my puter, I took the opportunity to download the latest student version. It seems to have updated the files I have created without too much fuss. (However, these are very small files compared to what happens in the real world)

It is very easy to upgrade your model file, but more importantly it is impossible to "downgrade" a file.

Someone might be perfectly content in using Revit 8 in their office, but as soon as they try to work with someone else's files created in a later version, they are out of luck.

I have talked to other 2 resellers and they will get back to me with the price in 2-3 days. It is not used here much, so not all the resellers are selling revit.

I am just curious, In the meantime, if anyone can tell me the cost for autocad and revit in their country.

My personal suggestion, as someone that works in an office with both CAD '09 and Revit 09 is this:

From what I've seen, they are essentially the same in terms of general capability, but the MAIN difference is that Revit has 'intelligence'. I'll skip my 100-page dissertation on the pitfalls of revit's "intelligence" (it's awesome if you have masochistic tendencies).

And the incompatibility of 09 with previous versions is a very real issue if you plan on dealing with clients that use 08.

I can't say much about prices/liscencing/upgrades and stuff of that nature, but as a matter of practicality, stick with CAD '09. If you can get a copy of revit, even just messing around with a 'lite' or edu. copy (legally) to learn it, then by all means do so. But if you're looking for something to run a business off of sanely; Revit's just too young a program with too many headaches, unless you have a VERY understanding client/architect that you're working with.

Thanks for your input slimjramirez. :) I think I ma getting bit clearer now as to what should I do.
Most of the dealers are advising me to buy only autocad now & later upgarde it to revit when I really need it. auotcad + upgarde to revit cost is similar to total revit cost, so I want be paying extra.
Also for now I need only autocad.
My client for whom I do outsourcing work, they all are talking about moving to Revit in future so I will have to learn it. so that I don't loose them when they make the switch. for that i will have to think of something. May be I can download trial version when I have free time on my hand & learn it within trial period.

NICE!
Thank-you, VERY much. Alex and I will definitely check this out.
By the way, (I think I've put it on another thread here), something you might check out is the Revit Forum at www.RevitCity.com . I'm on there with this same screename, and my drafter-in-crime, Alex, is on there as MacAddict08 or something like that. There's also www.AUGI.com (autodesk users guide international)
