Well the IT guys are at it again. They changed my login domain and now AutoCAD (2005 mechanical) won't start up. It pops up an error message saying that the config file is being used or is write protected. I copied all the files from my old Windows profile into my new one...so I don't know why Autocad is doing this. The *.cfg file is in it's new place, with basically the same file path and it's not write protected.
Anyway, I'll probably just reinstall Autocad. That should solve the problem. The problem is that every time I have had to reinstall Autocad, I have tried to save my menu files and basically everything in the support directory. However, it never seems to work. I always end up having to re-customize my menu one thing at a time.
The last time I reinstalled..., Autocad didn't recognize the menu files saved from before the reinstall.
Can anyone help me? or does anyone even know what I'm talking about?...or am I just on crack here?

Mike,
If you mean that you have to set your serch paths up again for your menus, I'd suggest that you keep all your menu files somewhere on the network.
Then, when you have everything set up as you want, export your profile to somewhere safe. If you have to reload, it shouldn't be too much of a hassle setting up as before.

I don't have a problem setting the search paths again...the problem is that when I reinstall, the menu customizations are reset...even if I unload the current menu and try to reload the backed up previous menu....even if when I try to completely overwrite all the menus & support files with my backups...I always end up redoing most of my customizations. It's really all that much work to get my menus the way I like them...but I'm sure there is an easy way to do this.
On another note...with the stupid way that Windows Professional is set up...(all the config files under a specific windows user rather than under the Program files/ directory)...I'm having trouble getting the mechanical modules to load with Autocad Mechanical. It seems that the regular Autocad menus get put under my windows profile but some of the mechanical stuff is still kept with the program files... :?

perhaps you may be able to help me.
Hi
I have been writing some custom menus and would like to roll them out accross the firm if I placed the menus somewhere on the server, how can I get everyones AutoCAD LT to automatically find the custom menus and load them up each time they start AutoCAD LT? This will help as should any changes arise I could then update everyones menu without having to make changes to there aclt.mns file.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Mike,
Don't know whether this will help but the mns file which holds the customisations, is in
c:\documents and settings\your name\application data\Autodesk\Autocad2004\R16.0\enu\support.
You will have to change the names accordingly for your system, but are these files the ones you have overwritten?

Don't know if I'm getting this right or not, buuuut:
If you are talking about the different user thing causing you to no longer have "ownership" of those files, there is indeed something you can do ...
you will have to log in under safe mode, and choose the ACTUAL administrator account, by default it is called "Administrator" and it usualy doesn't have a password unless IT set it up to ... [they'll be able to easily help you get into it once they hear what you are doing if so ...]
Once you are in, go tho the folder or files that you don't have access to anymore, and get Properties on them, now you will see a unique tab called security, under that you can assign which users have ownership.
If your user isn't listed, use the control on that window to dig up the users on the machine, once you see it, sett all the access checkboxes to your favour and when you apply, you will see it zip throughthem as if it is copying. You can play arround with selecting the folder above them and using the "Apply to all subfolders" option that comes up when you apply the change ...
Hope this helps ... XP is pretty dumb with how it deals with permissions ...

Actually I think I missunderstood a part ...
But if you are in a multiuser enviro, and are re-installing CAD as admin, the same would likely apply, since the default CAD install might then put it in the admin users space, once you are in the program, it will let you save to where you want presumably?
