when working on a collaberative 3-d project shoul i xref in different componets? or should it all be straight 3d with no xref? i tried xrefs thinking it would speed up autocad but i think it actually made it slower any ideas?

It all depends on the nature of the project. Xrefs do help in coordinating collaborative projects but inevitably that makes things more complicated.

XREF's should also reduce file size. How about doing a partial open of the section of the drawing that each individual requires.Yes that would be complicated to but should speed the drawing up as youll only have to load part of the drawing

Blocks, model your object, then use BMAKE to create a block. that way if you have many blocks, you only have to REFEDIT one block and the rest will update.
Only drama with that is, if you use SOLPROF and SOLDRAW to set up viewports, you will have to explode the blocks.

I suppose you might know, but just in case; if you try to use blocks as "gcp310" says, insert them in a layer you will often freeze for working faster. This way, the model is much less heavy. (what I mean is that blocks help a lot, but using freeze at the same time helps more)
