Is it possible to actually attach an image to the drawing so as ultimately the image resides in that file and is not just a reference?

Insert Menu > OLE Object...
Choose Create from File
Then browse the pic

All that does is create a reference to open up the image.

I think you need Raster Design to embed the image.

For sending files with that 'contain' images, you could use e-transmit to keep the link between the drawing and the image.
