for the past two weeks sometimes if i try to save AutoCAD shuts down without warning and I lose at least half an hours work. (I run do a q save every 10 mins) and then i come up with one of the following error messages.
8421
To say this is annoying would be like saying the sun's a little hot.
Does anybody have any ideas. - p.s. there are at least 7 nested xrefs!!!!

Did you try searching on any of the error messages either via Google or Yahoo or directly at the AutoDesk and/or AUGI websites?

You're running Xp, right? What version? Pro?
What do have for onboard RAM? How many GBs?
What do you have for a video card (need specs)?
All service packs loaded for AutoCAD? Windows up-to-date as well?
What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far?
Come on skipso...you know the drill.

Memory conflict issue. What's changed over the last two weeks? Load any new software?
"At least 7 nested xrefs." So does that mean the error only occurs when working on this one particular drawing?
Yeah, you guys with your nested xrefs. Seems like they are more trouble than they're worth.

2GB RAM XP Pro, on board graphics (Works comp) all sp's uploaded, trouble shooted unload an reload the main xref\unloaded the not needed xrefs, purge\audit and drank WAY too much coffee for time of night (17:25 GMT) Oh an drawing was started in microstation and converted, i received it already nested - personally i HAT nested xref's.

Here's one more link you can try. It involves fatal crashes when opening or closing AutoCAD but also mentions while working inside of a drawing.

Onboard graphics??? What, the company wouldn't pop for a real graphics card? Give the bean counters a good kick in the gluteus maximus. Tell em its from the Terminator.

"...drawing was started in microstation and converted..."
Maybe it's a bad Regapp. Try the purge command but this time do it from the command line an add a dash in front of it like this:
-purge
Regapps is one of the options in the list for purging unused objects. Purge them and see what happens.

well after a bit more investigating, not sure which buried xref it is (yet) but turns out one of them's corrupted. (I HATE NESTED XREFS!)
So i've gone into the drawing I need the info off and done a staightforward copy with base point, looks like it's done the trick.
