First ... Howdy from Texas!!

I haven't a clue how I got this far without finding this site. I have been using AutoCAD since the late 1980's and have a menu that I have written and or tweaked since the early 1990's. Perhaps that is how/why I found y'all.

I recently subscribed to the Autodesk update service and promptly received my copy of 2005, followed soon by 2006. Although I had upgraded over the years I had not kept up with loading the updates as I had R14 running like a Swiss Watch and doing EXACTLY what I wanted it to do. Remember the menu I mentioned? Although it looks like AutoCAD, it is really my version of it. That suited me, as productivity is the name of the game when one is self employed.

I was recently forced to reload AutoCAD when a hard disk died and I loaded 2005. Boy, was I in for a surprise! Not only does it appear that AutoCAD has made a bunch of changes, but they have also made customization (in my opinion at least) more difficult. The book (George Omura's) that I purchased doesn't go very deeply into customization and it appears that I will be required to basically start from scratch with a rewrite. Never mind that my Lisp routines don't seem to work and AutoCAD has two additional "languages" that are available now.

As a restoration architect that spends many of my days measuring and drawing buildings that are often not square with the world, all the bells and whistles that have been added are of little use other than fun. I began my menu under AutoCAD 9, because I was trying to focus the effort of our young interns to the task at hand, not have them drift off into the edges of the program. Now self employed, I am off on the path of knowledge again. At least I can be more selfish this time, as I answer to no one regarding how my files are drawn or xref'd together.

I look forward to learning from other dedicated professionals. Please forgive me if my questions appear to be from the point of view of a novice. Undoubtedly many will be, as AutoCAD has changed (improved?) greatly in the intervening years. I have read that the menu system changed with 2002 (or was it 2000i?), so many of my questions will appear old hat.

A little about me ... I started drafting in the mid 60's, starting out with Quil Pens on Linen, so I am obsessed with have my drawings appear to be professionally drafted. A degree in 1975 and 40 years of construction and design experience have lead me to where I am today. Professionalism seems to have (actually has) suffered over the years and all too many drawings I see on a jobsite are flat in appearance and uncoordinated, making much of the information unuseable.

As an aside, I am a moderator on another site (unrelated to work) and really like what you have created here. It has a really nice look and feel.
