snapping a rectangle to a line

Hello forum, I am new to Auto Cad and I have a very simple question.

I would like to know how to snap a rectangle to a wall/line so that the rectangle's side will be exactly on top of the wall/line.

Also What version of Autocad are you using, just helps us out when
you are asking questions.

its pretty simple. set your snaps for endpoint,mid point and perpendicular, then use the move tool,hit f3 to enable your snap tool,select the rectangle,on the mid point or endpoint, move the rectangle to the line.

one of the biggest tips to know about Autocad, Keep an eye out whats going on at the Command Line. it will tell you what stage the program its at.

Thanks for your prompt response!

I am quite new, I am just learning it. I have grahic design background. Currently I am a DVD Author.

My wife is an old school architect so we're both trying to learn Auto Cad.

We are running Autocad 2000.

I'll try to do what you suggested.

One more question:

Do I have to type the Subject line evey time? Even when I am just replying?

Not on your replys, only on new posts i think.

Autocad is a very frustrating program. i have been using autocad ever since version 12. but when you get the hang of it, you will be amazed at what can actually be acheived. When you get to the 3d modeling and rendering side of autocad, its truly rewarding.

you should try some tutorials. There are heaps out there. the cad tutor home page has links to ones that cadtutor has written. there is a member by the membername of MR T, he is a teacher and has many autocad tutorials for beginners. Try them out and if you get stuck, post your problem. i wish i knew about this site when i started out in cad. it would have sped up my learning curve thats for sure.

Wow !, after a pupil shouting at me today for asking them to stop punching another pupil, that makes my job worthwhile. :lol:

Thanks. Any questions fire away. I would recomend the following beginner tips though -

1) As mentioned read the command line, drag it up to at least three lines. Sometimes you miss a 'command' prompt or setting.

2) Hit F1 in autocad and there is a huge helpfile, loadsa of tutorials.

3) If you don't understand a tutorial on my site post what step you go to and I'll expand on it.

I don't mind making up a tutorial for you. I tend to do every step rather than summarise procedures, that way any level of user can cope. Basic teaching really. Anyway surf over to my site www.autocadzone.com and check out the help. Not mush basic 2d stuff. Use 'point and shoot' distance entry if you can, it's efficient and less vonfusing than co-ordinates :oops:
Since I teach in the classroom with a digital projector, I have stopped making tutorials, but ask away.
