I am somewhat familar with 3ds Max 9, but I can not figure out how to apply a saved jpeg image to an object in the scene.

 

Example: I have created my fire place and it is to be in a river stone and I have found the jpeg and saved it in a file on the desktop as materials for scene. when I select the object and open the materials editor, I click the material ball and select get material, then select bitmap. I then navigate to the file where the jpeg is and select. It then fills the entire material ball slot (not on the ball).

 

I know I am doing something wrong just not sure what. I know there is a simple solution to this.

Select an empty material slot to make it active, then click the little button next to the "Diffuse" color swatch. Then select bitmap and browse to find your river stone material.
