is there any way to recover a file that displays this message?

If it isn't valid I'm not sure you can "recover" it. No option to run an Audit on it? What kind of file is it? Was it created with Arch 2009 or some other program?

I was wrong. Use the RECOVER command first. When RECOVER doesn't work follow these suggestions from AutoDesk:

I get that message quite often, mostly it's becuase the file is done in a newer version and/or a vertical version of the program.

in this case newer than 2009 does sound a little bit suspect. :D
