I want to add to a picture a "hidden" feature, shown by a different linetype. So I create a new layer, choose a dashed linetype rather than a solid one for the layer, then set that layer as default, then draw the feature. But the feature is still drawn with the solid linetype, not the linetype I chose for the item... what am I doing wrong?

Sounds like either the object's linetype is not set to "by layer" or the global LTSCALE or object's LTSCALE is not allowing the dashed line to display.

Also look into PSLTSCALE and MSLTSCALE...

I just checked the properties of the item I drew, and it is definitely set for linetype to be "by layer".

I don't really understand the rest of your post...

I entered the ltscale command and tried a few different scales...

I had to enter ltscale as 0.2 for it to look right... is that normal!?

What is your annotative scale?

Does it display correctly/incorrectly in model space or paper space?

What is your paper space scale/ viewport scale?

Basically there are 2 ways you can work - set LTSCALE, MSLTSCALE and PSLTSCALE to 1 (and let the annotative scale drive the linetype scaling)

OR set MSLTSCALE and PSLTSCALE to 0 and set the LTSCALE to whatever the printed scale will be (i.e. 20 if the viewport scale is 1"=20')

The linetype should display the same in both the model and paperspace using either of these methods. Please read the help file for additional explanation of the variables.

You might need to tweak the individual object's linetype scale if it still does not display as you want it to using 1 of the above methods. Or choose a different linetype all together to get the desired result.

I hope that helps - I think I have all the variables listed correctly...

...or perhaps I have completely missed the point here...?

What did you draw the feature with? 3DFACEs, SOLIDs & TRACEs do not accept linetypes. -David
