The answer is yes.

Use the pedit command > type pedit in the command line > select one of the lines >

Object selected is not a polyline
Do you want to turn it into one? <Y>
Press Return

Enter an option [Close/Join/Width/Edit vertex/Fit/Spline/Decurve/Ltype
gen/Undo]:
Type j and press return
Select all the lines you want to join and press Return twice to finish off the command.

Et Voila - all lines are now joined so that you have a path to extrude along.

The only book I've ever used is the Acad manual but there are some good books out there eg Osmura is the author of one.

The Learning Assistance CD is really very good for showing you how to do things when you are on that steep initial learning curve. Only thing about it is I kept falling asleep at the computer after about 15 minutes using it!

Also, check out the AutoCAD resource page on the CADTutor web site at: http://www.cadtutor.net/acad/general/resource/resource.html There are some book reviews and links to other tutorial sites.

You may even find the tutorials at CADTutor worth a quick look
