spline Problem (nodes)

In this being my first post I would like to say Hello.

Here is my problem,
Sometime after spline editing a polyline the number of selectable nodes jumps to an insanely and unmanageable number that makes quick editing virtually impossible.
So what makes a 10 node managable polyline suddenly turn into a 80 node nightmare?
At first the original number of nodes stays intact but I would like to know what changes and how can I control this.

OK I'll guess.......
did you use the pedit "fit" option instead of "spline"?

That only happens to me when I offset a pline.
I am using ACAD2000.

I don't think you can offset a spline and not get 80-odd new nodes. You'll have to offset them as a pline first then convert to a spline. Hope this helps.. but probably not.
