When moving an object, I have ortho switched on and am pointing my cursor in the direction I wish to move. I then type in the distance I wish to move, however it just moves a random distance and it doesn't only move in the direction I am pointing, it just seems to move wherever it feels like. Its not snapping to another object or anything, its just completely random.

It'll be something stupid but can't figure it out. Any ideas? Its doing my head in.

Has it worked in the past?

I almost never use Ortho, but I always have Polar Track on, and then it works like you described - don't know if it's suppose to work with Ortho as well.

Maybe it is your wording that has me confused but when you say "pointing my cursor" are you actually dragging it in the direction you wish to go?

It should work with ortho toggled on. At least it does for me.

You must pick a base point (or type 0,0, etc.) prior to pulling your cursor in a direction and typing in the distance.

Do you have your OSnaps turned on? Sometimes it snaps to stuff outside your screen so it doesn't matter what you type in.

The command seemed to work fine up until the last few days, that's why I get the feeling i've just altered a setting somewhere but don't know where.

I am dragging the cursor in the direction I want to go, yeah, and I have picked a base point prior to moving it. Whether snaps is on or isn't on it keeps doing the same thing.

Sometimes it moves exactly where I want it to and sometimes it doesn't. Its a proper strange one.
