This is probably a pretty trivial question, but...

Every time we open a new Autocad session here at work, Autocad creates a new "Drawing1.dwg". The problem is that it doesn't disappear when a new, existing drawing is opened up. It remains open until you shut down Autocad and whatever drawings you have open. It then asks if we want to save changes to Drawing1.dwg. We recently re-installed Autocad2002 and this started happening. No-one can figure out how to change it. Autocad always created "Drawing1.dwg" when a new session was started, but it disappeared once an existing drawing file was openned. It gets annoying!!!!

can anyone help...thanks in advance!

Off the top of my head...Single Drawing Compatability Mode...(variable is "SDI")

When drawing1.dwg would go away, could you have multiple drawings open at once, or just one at a time? If only 1 at a time, then SDI was turned on. To duplicate this, type "SDI" (no quotes) at the command prompt and press enter. Type 1 and press enter. Viola!

Now, if you were able to open multiple drawings, disregard my above statement and tell your coworkers "This guy's an idiot!"

thanks, but that's not it.

I've always used multiple drawing compatibility and didn't have this problem.

hmmm....?

Yahoo, we figured it out!

We had set Autocad to "start in" (desktop shortcut "start in" option) a network drive ("L" drive) where all our project files are saved to. Apparently this was causing all our problems because we changed the "start in" location back to "C" drive (the same drive as Autocad system files are found) and voila! all our problems were solved.

I guess Autocad doesn't like starting in a folder different than where it's system files are saved. I can point the "start in" location to anywhere on the "C" drive, but as soon as I point it to another drive, the same errors occur.

ie. Autocad was not saving the OSNAP settings and it was always creating a "Drawing1" which stayed open even after openning an existing drawing file.

Hope this helps anyone else who's encountered this quirk.

Cheers!
