Cad64
I am unable to duplicate your problem. How are you arriving at this situation? Is that a Spline shape that you've converted to an editable poly? How are you Extruding? Are you using the Extrude modifier, or are you doing a manual Extrude or are you using the Extrude dialog? If you're using the Extrude dialog, have you tried all three options?
NH3man!
All poly lines are on the x,z axis there for y is the only way it will extrude I would say.
killerbytes
I found it in another forum. create a new object then attach, extrude. It will take the z direction of the new object then delete the element of the new object.

Cad64
Make sure you Extrude with the "Local Normal" option checked.
