Slow Dialog box?

I have a problem with Dialog box generation.This is even in a fresh new BLANK drawing. 2 layers, no entities.
Several Dialog boxes do it: xref & hatch, but NOT the printer or Layers db's.
It has nothing to do with the drawing, it's the hardware or O/S.
I have tweaked the display settings to no end, well hopefully there's one I missed that will cure the disfunction.
I've copied the settings from other machines that are identical but notta??

is the mysterious FILEDIA system variable set to 1?

It sure is, but it also acts the same way when set to 0.

My mistake, read "slow" as "show"

Since you say it's a hardware thing - you mind giving us your specification on the hardware?

A blank drawing you say, one with your own template? or one with no template?

this happens with any template, mine and even the acad one out of the box from another machine.
