many offices have their own layer standards, but there are some standardized ones out there depending on which country you are in. America has the AIA layer standard for all Architectural stuffs.

I worked in the civil field for several years in both the municipal sector and for a private consulting firm. The municipal engineering department had its own standards for linetypes that harken back to the turn of the century. The private consulting firm relied exclusively on the state Department of Transportation standards as that was where the bulk of its work came from.

For mechanical drawings look to the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and/or the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) for guidance on recommended linetypes. I believe that ANSI Y14.2M-1979 (R1987) covers line conventions and lettering.
