How do i make cad run faster its really slow to slow that when i type in a comand it will take for ever to do anything and freezes

Posted

First I would look at my hardware setup to determine whether it meets or exceeds the minimum specs recommended by AutoDesk. Areas of primary importance include the amount of physical RAM and the graphics card.

What OS are you using?

Is this a 32-bit or 64-bit system?

Are you making extensive use of xrefs?

When did the problem first occur?

Do you work mainly in 2D, 3D or a combination of both?

What is the file largest drawing file size you work with?

What OS are you using? windows XP

Is this a 32-bit or 64-bit system? 32 bit - 4 gig of ram 64 bit processor and a very nice graphics card which i am sure makes no difference without 64 bit Vista

Are you making extensive use of xrefs? not sure about this

When did the problem first occur? this week when extruding

Do you work mainly in 2D, 3D or a combination of both? both plans and axo

What is the file largest drawing file size you work with? 18,000 and getting larger

sorry i'm really stressed what else do you need?

Can I assume it is XP Pro?

Please provide specs on graphics card.

Had you made any recent changes (manually tuned) via 3Dconfig?

What other programs are running in the background (anti-virus)?

I'm guessing by your response you do NOT use xrefs.

I'm not a big fan of Vista. I've read numerous articles on how to speed the OS up. Has this slowness in AutoCAD always been present right from the first time you loaded the program?

Have you looked at the link rkent provided above? If so, did you make any changes as a result of reading it?

The final project is an 18MB file?

Sorry my mistake, I thought you had just quoted him and asked for help haha, I didnt realize you answered his questions in the quote, never seen that done before. I apologize...

Richter: The OP answered my initial questions my appending them to a copy of my original reply. Even I got fooled there for a moment thinking that he hadn't answered them.

Also thought I might add, our computer systems at work were dealthly slow, and turns out there was a virus on everyones computer, the rest of the computer worked fine it was just AutoCAD that was slow... so might want to run a virus check

Unless the virus is AutoCAD specific wouldn't it affect all programs in a similar fashion?

I believe it was AutoCAD specific. I wish I could remember the name of the file...

One thing to try is search ".dil" files, notice the "i" in the middle, it was made to look like a ".dll" system file, but they capitalize the "i" so it looks like a system file, but it was in fact a virus. Deleting that helped, but I had to to a system restore to actually fix the problem.

There was the first macro virus called AutoCAD2k\Star and then there was an AutoLisp virus called AL\Bursted-D I believe.

quadro fx 1700 is my graphics card

Hi there, I'm typing on behalf of my girlfriend as I can prob help you some more with the techincal specs.

The computer is running an e6600, quadro 1700 and 4Gb RAM. Its only got issues in AutoCAD, everything else is fine. Drivers are latest (Chose the gfx ones not the performace ones).

She's fairly new to AutoCAD and so the advanced coding etc are way above her head. Any more help would be greatly appreciated as she's getting very stressed

Cheers :)

If it is only affecting AutoCAD, I would try a system restore to a point where she knows that it was working good, say last week at some point. Make sure to back up the file she is working in. It worked for me when my CAD was slow, so it is worth a shot! Start --> All programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> System Restore. Good luck!

Your girlfriend is the AutoCAD tech. OK. The system specs appear to be fine although I think XP Pro is best for the serious AutoCAD user. I keep harping on this point as you have yet to answer it but has your GF gone through the list rkent posted yet?

There is one other possibility. XP has a difficult time recognizing anything over 3GB of RAM unless the boot.ini file is editted for what is termed the 3GB/switch. You have two options. Depending on your computer's set up you can try removing 1GB of RAM then boot up the computer, open AutoCAD and try working on the file to see what happens. Why remove 1GB? Because in the weird world of computing using XP the extra 1GB of memory is actually responsible for the operational slowness of your system. The other option would be to edit the boot.ini file. This procedure adds a single line to the file giving the computer the option of recognizing more than 3GB of RAM while running XP. I use this method on my work computer. It is aimed at those of us faced with working on large drawing files (mostly 3D).
