viewport issues

here's my next very elementary question: i've got two files. one has a 3-view in it, and one has the isometric. i need to put the isometric drawing into the 3-view in the open space to finish it. the teacher says use viewports. i've made a viewport in the 3-view drawing, and when i make it, it puts another copy of the same 3-view in it. how do i put the isometric from the other file in it?

sorry. two separate drawing files. i had to do one file in iso an done in 3-view. although, i have already copied the iso into the 3-view, so i can see it in the drawing view, but then when i go to the next page over (the 2nd button over at the bottom right of the screen), the iso isn't there.

First - using the correct terms will really help us help you. I assume "3-view" is a 3D model; "drawing view" is a viewport in a layout (paperspace); "next page over" is a layout tab.

One method to handle what you are doing is to go into the file with the 3D model and in a layout (paperspace) create a viewport (MVIEW command). You will see the 3D model through that viewport. Double click inside the viewport and you will be in that viewport, pan over to move the 3D model out of view. Insert the iso, zoom, pan etc to center the iso. Pick the Model/PS tab at the bottom of the screen or double click outside the viewport and you will be back in Paperspace.

Is that what you had in mind?

i think so. i'm trying it though and it still won't quite work.

by 3-view, i mean a 2D drawing with 3 views to show every aspect of a drawing with 2D.
i'm trying to put my iso into the free corner of the 2D.

the problem i'm having now after your suggestion is that after i make the viewport, it shows the whole drawing, the total of 4 images. you say to zoom and pan to get the right one showing, but when i zoom it zooms the whole page. i don't know how to zoom just in the viewport.

thanks for the responses. i think i am getting somewhere. this is due tomorrow, so i may just be cheating a bit and forgetting the viewport and pasting the other drawing where i need it. again, sorry i'm not explaining all this very well.

well first, you need to insert the iso into the "3-view" file either by block or xref.:)

then just simply create the viewport as normal and adjust the zoom and pan to get the iso in a view you want :D

basically every time you create a new viewport AutocAD will show you what you have in model space zoomed to extents, as a default view.

OHHH double click inside the viewport you want to make "active" and then zoom and pan :D

You missed the part where I said "Double click inside the viewport and you will be in that viewport, pan over to move the 3D model out of view. Insert the iso, zoom, pan etc to center the iso. "
