XREFS MISSING IN LDT 2006

I open the dwg, isolate a layer, and insert a block to replace that layer. I hit layer previous - no visible change.(?) I hit layer previous again and the other layers come back but, my xrefs are missing!! They still show in the xref manager as loaded, and reloading does not help. I check the layer manger to make sure the layers didn't somehow get turned off... those xref layers do not exist. Xrefs that were attached but not loaded still have layers present and can be loaded, but those that were loaded are gone. At this point, if I save and re-open the file, the xrefs that were unloaded remain unloaded, and the missing xrefs have returned, but as if they had been detached and re-attached which means that, yepp, I have lost all of my layer settings for those xrefs. Anyone know how to avoid this mess?

This problem can be fixed by going into the CUI and setting the (unsupported) Express Tools' Layer Isolate button to initiate the (AutoCAD) LAI command instead.

Moral of the story: Do not use Express tools.
