What version of phpBB and MySQL are you running? I have another small forum I visit regularly with around 60 members and about 4200 posts. He's running phpBB 2.0.11 and I'm not sure what version of MySQL, but he's having issues with his database. New users are unable to login and random users are deleted occasionally.

I'm always using the latest version of phpBB to avoid any security issues. The current/latest version is 2.0.17 and I'm running MySQL 4.1.13
Not sure what could be causing your problems. There are a great many parameters to consider. :(

I was thinking it may have something to do with running MySQL 3.x on a newer version board. Could be a bug that they nailed in a newer version of phpBB. The main reason he didn't want to upgrade the board is because he has some mods that aren't exactly fully compatible with 2.0.17, so he'd have to remove or recode them. He's probable just going to go with the Simple Machines forum http://www.simplemachines.org/ and use a bridge to connect it with his mambo portal. I wonder if there's a way to port all the posts in the database from the phpBB to the SMF board?

Well there is a converter from phpBB to Simple Machines. You can find it here: http://www.simplemachines.org/download.php?converters - I'm pretty sure that you'll also find a bridge for phpBB and Mambo. Can't believe there isn't one.
I guess the older version of MySQL could be a problem but you'd more likely experience query errors than users being deleted.

Well, he's really fed up with phpBB. I told him there was a bridge, but he's still going to stick with smf. I'll tell him about the converter, didn't know there was one.
Thanks for the help. :D

Well phpBB is not perfect and we've been waiting for version 3 since forever but there is a mass of MODs and people out there who know it inside out. It's very well supported and it generally does a good job. I've not heard of anyone else having serious or unresolvable problems with it.
I thought about changing to Invision some time ago because I like the way that board works but I managed to MOD phpBB so that it has just the features I want.
