Can anybody explain how i can create a helical cut on the outside of an elliptical profile.I am trying to create a cooling groove on the outside of an elliptical tube.

Thanks

Well you can draw it in 2d on a sketch plane off of the surface. Then in a 3d sketch use Project Curve. Select your elliptical surface as the "face" and your sketch. Can you show a screen shot of what you are working on?

You can get the desired results using a couple of perpendicular work planes and a 3d sketch.

Use "3D Intersection" to create your sweep path (Blue Line), around the outside of the cylinder on the work plane.

Then create your sweep profile on the perpendicular plane and cut to make the grove.

Hope that helps

Sorry,

The example I gave was on a cylinder and not an elliptical cylinder. I missed that reading the post.

However, it's even simpler then my first post. You will first need to create a coil with an axis through the center of your cylinder.

Then, use "Project Curve to Surface" to create a 3d sketch of your coil onto your elliptical cylinder.

Then create a sweep profile and use your newly projected curve as your path.

Thanks Kencaz.
I used your instructions and eventually got what i was looking for.I havent used the "3D sketch" before so it was another step along the learning curve.
